The sixteenth-century botanist John Gerard classifies and describes solanum melongena, or "madde-apples." At left is a woodcut depicting solanum melongena. The woodcut depicts the plant's chaotic tangle of leaves and characteristic flowers; at bottom are its fruit ("mala insana").
